IT Carlow has been announced as an exhibitor at the Agri Careers Fair in the RDS on 30 March.

The third-level institute launched its Bachelor of Science (BSc) in sustainable farm management and agribusiness two years ago, which combines agricultural knowledge with business and entrepreneurial skills.

Representatives from the college will be there on the day to speak to people interested in applying for the course.

The degree course is taught on the college’s Wexford campus. Students can apply for a Level 7 course, which is three years in duration, or a four-year Level 8 qualification. After two years of study, students receive a higher certificate in sustainable farm management and agribusiness (Level 6).

Programme organisers say the course equips students with both the practical and academic skills necessary to own and manage a modern-day farm of any size.

Modules taught on this course include farm buildings and regulations, farm mechanisation and regulations, animal and plant biology, agricultural sustainability, soil/plant interactions, nutrition, breeding, crop protection, farm business management and IT and research skills.

The programme includes multiple site visits to farms and organic food producers to demonstrate the best practice techniques and enhance practical skill development.

There is a 24-week work placement on a relevant farm or agricultural business.

School leavers can apply for the course through the CAO, while mature students will be assessed on an individual basis.

Agri Careers 2017 will take place on Thursday 30 March in the RDS Main Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, brought to you by Irish Farmers Journal and open eir. Click here for more information.
