IWT asks Coveney to deny single farm payments to illegal burning culprits
The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) has called on Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to deny single farm payments to those found responsible for illegal burning.
The IWT has said that while the Wildlife Acts allow for illegal burning to threaten a land owner's single farm payment, the organisation believes this is not routinely enforced.
It said the illegal practice of burning growing vegetation is resulting in the massive degradation of upland habitats and is driving species to extinction. It added that apart from the massive damage that uncontrolled fires cause to wildlife, they also pollute water, air and threaten property.
The IWT has therefore asked the minister to ensure that cross-compliance measures will be strictly enforced.
