Kellys of Borris held an open day last week to showcase the ranges of machinery from Horsch and Dalbo.

Horsch has taken a major chunk of the Irish drill and high-end sprayer market over the last few years. This is mainly due to the work done by Kellys leading to the company being the UK and Ireland’s biggest Horsch dealers in 2016.

Considering that dealers who would be covering much bigger and more tillage-based area in the UK would be included, it is a massive result for the Co Carlow-based company.

Serious business

A Horsch representative from the UK said that Kellys was doing some serious business. Over the past couple of years it has got to a point where it has 87% of the trailed grain drill market, coming from a very small number five or six years ago.

Horsch has also added a new lower tier to its sprayer range called the eco, which slots in below the two current models. They say that this now means their well-renowned and class-leading boom levelling system is available on a lower specification machine, bringing this technology to the more modest-sized grower.

Dalbo was showing its full range of tillage equipment at the open day. It is best known for its roller but also produces other cultivation equipment such as subsoilers and other ground preparation kit.

A representative from Dalbo said that sales of their rollers were very good in Ireland and Kellys have sold 40 rollers in the past couple of years.

Of those 40 rollers, only one ring has been broken and has needed to be replaced under the six-year warranty that Dalbo gives with its machines.

TAMS

On the evening of the open day, an information session was held with Horsch and Dalbo presenting their latest machinery to the public.

Jonathon Leech from Kellys also gave a presentation on the current TAMS tillage scheme and he is in a good position to talk about it as he is seeing the problems and also the good things the scheme is doing in the tillage sector.

An interested crowd of up to 100 people sat down to hear about the scheme and how to get the most of it.

Jonathon said that there is great interest in TAMS-eligible machinery and this is helping to drive both Horsch and Dalbo sales.
