This week, we run a special feature on the Kerry Co-op shares project. It is an issue that affects a few but has consequences for many.

Our special investigation raises a number of significant issues, particularly around the simplistic approach taken to share valuation and the principle of applying retrospective penalties based on a revision to the Revenue manual.

There is clearly a lot to play out in this story yet and while the Government has to respect Revenue’s independence on such matters, it has a mandate to ensure citizens of the State are treated fairly.
