The biggest community initiative in Macra’s calendar has arrived as we celebrate Know Your Neighbour Weekend on 25 and 26 July, with our sponsors, Calor. Know Your Neighbour Weekend aims to bring neighbours together to get to know each other informally. Those living in isolated parts of the country with limited access to services rely on their closest neighbours for support, security and friendship.

A fun event during the summer can provide the ideal opportunity to get to know these neighbours and establish a strong support network. It’s not too late to host an event as they can happen any time during the summer. You can register your event on knowyour neighbour.ie and Macra will send you a pack with T-shirts, caps, posters and balloons to help you with your event.

Event list

  • • Open Macra Challenge 24 July at Araglin Carnival Open Macra Challenge runs in conjunction with Mitchelstown and Fermoy Macra, Co Cork. A three-person team will be completing a three-part challenge, including obstacle courses, picking ducks with mini diggers and a quad bike obstacle course.
  • • Castlebar Macra barbecue 25 July at 17:00 in Johnny McHales Bar There will be live music, a barbecue and some spot prizes to give away on the day. The event is free, Donations in Aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Castlebar Macra.
  • • Crossmolina Show 25 July from 11a.m. to 4pm in Crossmolina, Co Mayo Ardagh Macra na Feirme is encouraging people to visit the show. The club is donating a prize in the youth baking section and will have an information stand.
  • • Picnic in the park 26 July from 4pm in Rosehill West Roselawn, Ballinacurra, Midleton, Co Cork Neighbours are gathering for a picnic and sports events on the green.
  • • Community fun day and barbecue 26 July from 4pm in Phelim Wood, Tullow, Co Carlow A community day with a barbecue, old fashioned fun day games, such as three legged races, egg and spoon, sack races, as well as five a side football, music, food and fun.
  • • Afternoon picnic 26 July from 2pm in Tullamore, Co Offaly Tullamore Macra is hosting a picnic on Sunday afternoon on the grounds of Charleville Castle, with Macra members, friends and family. Hopefully, with a bit of sunshine.
  • • Cupcakes for Navan 26 July from 12pm in Navan town Navan Macra will hand out cupcakes to anyone and everyone on Sunday in Navan. This event will be non-profit, each of the members will bake buns and walk around Navan on Sunday 26 July and hand them out.
  • • Canal walk, run and barbecue 26 July from 4pm in Shannon Harbour, Co Offaly Ferbane/Banagher Macra is running a 5km canal walk/run, followed by a barbecue in Shannon Harbour. The event is in aid of Offaly Hospice, which provides a vital service to the county. All welcome to attend.
  • • Macra at the Ossory Show 26 July from 10am until 4pm at the Ossory Show, Mountrath Rd, Rathdowney, Co Laois Laois Macra na Feirme will have a tent at the Ossory Show. There will be face painting and games for the kiddies. Come and see what it is all about.
  • • St James’ Fest Athboy 26 July from 12.30pm in the Fair Green, Athboy Music, games and fun for all the family at St James’ Fest 2015 in the Fair Green Athboy.
  • • Seven Oaks street feast 26 July from 2pm at Seven Oaks, Sarsfield Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10 A residents’ picnic where everyone brings a dish to share.
  • • Family fun day 26 July from 5pm in Mitchells Bar, Legan, Co Longford Family fun day in aid of cancer care and research. There will be a barbecue, pig roasting, a balloon launch, children’s activities, live music and lots more.
  • • Feirm Factor 27 July from 9pm in Durrow, Co Laois. Come and see Macra groups from Laois compete against each other to win Feirm Factor – the competition will test their farming skills.
  • • Know Your Neighbour walk 30 July from 8pm at Carnew Training and Development Centre, Woolgreen, Carnew, Co Wicklow. Know Your Neighbour walk is being organised for the whole community. Walking is the easiest way to get moving, get active, be happy and make new friends.
  • • Barbecue and rodeo bull 1 August from 7pm until 10pm at Gallonray House, Maudabawn, Cootehill, Co Cavan Test your skills on the rodeo bull followed by a barbecue. This will be followed by a band and dance.
  • • Sligo Summer Festival 7 August from 9pm until 12pm in Sligo town Sligo Town Macra will be supporting the Sligo Summer Festival. This event features a great lineup on both nights, including Wheatus and Boney M.
  • • Ballylanders Pattern Festival Family Fun Day 15th August from 12pm in Ballylanders, Co Limerick Ballylanders Pattern Festival is on and Ballylanders Macra are volunteering with the local soccer field family fun day at the event.
  • • Relay for Life 15 August from 5pm in St Michael’s GAA, Toomevara, Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Nenagh Macra will be taking part in Relay for Life, a 24-hour fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society. Join them in a community and fun-filled weekend.
  • • Coney Island Trip 22 August from 2pm on Coney Island Sligo Town Macra will host its annual trip to Coney Island on Saturday, including a barbecue and an island walk. All interested parties must register in advance.
