Lanaken selections

The FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses will be held from 21-24 September 2017 at Lanaken, Belgium.

Fifteen horses, five in each age category, will be selected to represent the Irish WBFSH Studbooks. The following criteria shall in the five and six-year-old categories:

  • The top two from the Dublin five and six-year-old Championships.
  • The remaining horses will be selected by Chef d’Equipe Comdt. John Ledingham based on performances in all FEI, SJI and other relevant competitions.
  • Two reserves shall also be selected in each age category.
  • The top horse from the RDS Dublin seven-year-old Championship will be selected for the seven-year-old squad. The remaining horses will be selected by the Chef d’Equips based on performances. Factors that will be taken into account include suitability of the combination to cope with the conditions of the competition at Lanaken and if the selector considers a combination likely to have a long term future.

    Irish dominate in Germany

    Ireland’s Bertram Allen and Denis Lynch took first and second in last Sunday’s €90,000 Grand Prix at Eschweller, Germany. With GK Casper, Allen clocked a fast 35.66 seconds in the jump-off of the Longines World Ranking class to take the €22,000 first prize. Lynch was also clear in 36.09s on Royne Zetterman’s AB Echo de Laubry. Meantime, Billy Twomey had a speed win in Antwerp on Joe Flynn’s Irish-bred Ardcolum Duke. by Gypsy Duke out of a Clover Hill dam.

    John Osborne named chief executive of HRI racecourses

    Horse Racing Ireland have announced the appointment of John Osborne as Chief Executive of HRI Racecourses Ltd.

    HRI-owned racecourses stage 91 fixtures a year and have a combined annual turnover of just under €15m. Osbourne will be responsible for all racecourse activities including strategy, finance, marketing, property, catering and health and safety. He will take up the role on 1 July.

    Speaking after the announcement, Osborne said: “Whilst I will be sad, after eight breeding seasons at the Irish National Stud, to leave the team which has made the stud the showcase it now is, I relish the new challenges which the role of CEO of HRI Racecourses presents. I look forward to helping Irish racing maintain its position as a leader in the thoroughbred world.”

    Brian Kavanagh added: “The dynamic global environment is creating both opportunities and challenges for our sector. Racecourses are in the entertainment business and John’s skillset will be of huge benefit in driving commerciality, sponsorship, and customer experience.”
