This is the time of the year for planning and setting goals. This is important and everyone should have some form of five-year plan.

This plan could be:

  • Developing my farm and farming system to maximise efficiencies and returns.
  • Undertaking sustainable expansion.
  • Preparing for retirement.
  • Stepping back while at the same time seeing my farm develop and protecting my income.
  • It is useful to jot down some key thoughts or hopes and then expand on these. When going through this process, potential restrictions will emerge. These may include:

  • Access to land.
  • Finance.
  • Finding a suitable collaborator.
  • Skilled management.
  • All such restrictions can be overcome and providing your plan is realistic, options are available. It may require thinking outside the box and being prepared to take that final step when opportunity knocks.

This can be difficult but the expert independent support and facilitation service provided by The Land Mobility Service (contact by email on info@landmobility.ie) is there to help.

    In our opinion:

  • Planning is essential.
  • Availing of expert opinion and advice is important.
  • Explore all options.
  • What can be done inside the farm gate?
  • Is collaboration something to be considered?
  • Contract-rearing.
  • Share-farming.
  • Would a long-term lease work?
  • Use a facilitator to help develop a sustainable and workable arrangement. Any arrangement must work for all parties.
