Approximately 500 farmers attended the latest meeting in Newport, Co Mayo on Friday, according to the INHFA.
The organisation is proposing a specific payment on hill type land and to frontload payments on the first 20ha at the rate of €250/ha, with a rate of €170/ha on next 14ha and €70/ha on next 6ha.
“This will double payments for many farmers and provide critical support especially for smaller farms which will see a 20ha farm increase payments from €2,056 up to €5,000,” INHFA Mayo County Chair John Moran said.

Political representatives have also addressed the INHFA meetings with Fianna Fáil TD’s Lisa Chambers and Dara Calleary, Sinn Féin Senator Rose Conway Walsh and Independent MEP Marian Harkin speaking at the latest meeting in Newport.
Moran said that all speakers agreed that designation of land should be based on science, through a bio-physical review. INHFA has previously described the selection of land under the specifically constrained heading as “political”.
The next meeting in the organisation’s ANC campaign is in Peacocks, Maam Cross on Friday at 8pm with Moran stating that he expects another large turnout. “It clearly illustrates the support farmers have for the INHFA’s three-point plan,” he said.
