Situated on the grounds of Templeogue United football Club in Dublin, the idea of starting a Men’s Shed came about on an ordinary day. “About two years ago, the men where cutting the grass and maintaining the cleanliness of the grounds, and they there were discussing the idea of forming a Men’s Shed,” says Joe McDonagh, treasurer of Templeogue Community Men’s Shed.

“They applied for a Men’s Shed status in September of last year, which was when I became involved.”

Since then, the men have been working hard to generate a homely feel within the Men’s Shed, completing the necessary bits and bobs.

“The bulk of our activity over the last few couple months has been geared towards making the shed liveable, which included getting it insulated. We have a workshop area in the back of the shed and we have an area located at the front where we make tea,” Joe explains.

With the final touches complete, the shedders wish to get more active in their area. “We are getting more involved with our local community. We look after the grounds of the football club and we are located beside the secondary school, so we would like to help them out in the future.”

“There is a bar located upstairs in the football club and we would have a few sessions there. One guy plays the accordion, so he would perform a few songs. The shed gives them an outlet for their talent, and it brings them together to socialise.”

With approximately 25 members, Templeogue Community Men’s Shed opens its door from Monday to Friday from 10am, and new faces are always welcome.

“We would encourage new members to come to the shed and see for themselves. That way they can get a feel for the place, meet the other members and have a tea and a chat,” says Joe.
