The calf trade has continued to be fairly steady where the numbers on offer remain reasonably small.

However, where larger numbers were on offer, the average price of Friesian bulls, particularly young, light types, eased slightly again. Exporter activity is low, but mart managers have said in recent days that they are starting to become more active.

Light Friesian bull calves are selling from €60 to €90, with stronger farmers-type calves making from €120 to €150. Low supply of traditional breed and continental calves has resulted in strong prices being paid. Angus and Herefords are making from €200 to €400/head, with continental calf prices actually running higher this year than last year with most selling from €300 to €450/head.
