Claiming the supreme interbreed championship after securing the Limousin breed title earlier was Drummin J-Lo. Bred by John McInerney, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare, this January 2015 heifer is no stranger to success, having claimed the reserve junior female champion at Tullamore show last year. The sire behind this one was Wilodge Vantastic, who also sired Ardnacrusha Jaguar, the reserve Limousin champion on the day. Jaguar, a November 2014 bull, was bred by Donal Molony, C Clare and was shown fresh from claiming the overall male championship in Balmoral this year.
Similar results were seen in the Munster Agricultural Societies all-Ireland pedigree beef heifer calf championship, where Limousin cattle claimed the top two spots. Continuing his success from the Limousin ring, Donal Molony claimed the two top positions and his fair share in the €1,000 prize fund. Leading the line-up was Ardnacrusha Kylie, who was closely followed by her field comrade Ardnacrusha KitKat. In a close third was the Charolais heifer winner Goldstar LuLu.
Reserve interbreed for Angus ring
Mogeely Miylo continued her winning streak and made it four breed championships out of four in the past month. Bred by Albert and Jennifer DeCogan, Castlemartyr, Co Cork, Miylo is sired by three-time all-Ireland champion and past stock bull Rosemead Karona. Miylo claimed the breed championship before securing reserve interbreed supreme champion.
Second to her in the Angus ring was the stock bull Wedderlie Blackbox, again from the DeCogans. This six-year-old is sired by Abberton Mr Bionic G441 and has already won many championship throughout his showing career.
Hereford Gem
Coming up trumps in the Hereford ring was Banteer Gem 831. Bred by Anthony McCarthy, Banteer, Co Cork, this was Gem’s first day out of the year after a very successful show career as a calf last year. She had earlier secured female championship from a strong female line up. Her sire was Dernaroy 1 Hawke.
Reserve honours here went to Henry Dudley’s September-born Lakelodge Joe 16th. Sired by Ballyavilla Caradoc, Joe beat off stiff competition from senior animals to also claim the Male championship earlier in the day.
Heifers lead the way for Charolais
In the Charolais ring, the first and second prize winners in the senior heifer class went on to claim the top spots. Overall championship on the day went to the Ryan family’s Goldstar Jamique, a Texan Gie daughter. Again no stranger to success, she secured reserve heifer calf champion at the Charolais National last year. The reserve winner was Jerry O’Keefe, Knocklong, Co Limerick with his two-year-old Jeanie.
Stylish Simmental
Top honours in the Simmental ring went to the very stylish yearling, Corbally Goddess. Bred by James Browne, Glanworth, the sire behind Goddess was old favourite Hillcrest Champion. Clinching the reserve title was the Belgooly interbreed champion Clonagh Willow from Adrian Bateman. This October 2008 cow is sired by Hochenhaule Maverick and was originally bred by Garreth Behan.
In the small turnout of Belgian Blues it was Billy Dunne who secures the championship sash with Erril Invisible. Sired by Empire, this heifer already claimed a red rosette at Tullamore last summer.
