Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, David Tyndall said he would like to see the scope for the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) widened.

Tyndall also said that “the income averaging needs to be sorted out, people are getting stuck with big taxes and they can’t pay them when they have a good year followed by a bad year”.

Like Tyndall, IFA pig committee chair Pat O’Flaherty said he would like to see the ceiling for investments under TAMS increased.

“We would like to see the investment ceiling raised from €80,000 to €300,000. Eight thousand euro might be a lot of money for a dairy farmer, but because of the capital investment on a pig farm, it doesn’t reach very far.”

Energy efficient equipment

Other things that O’Flaherty would like to see with Tuesday’s budget is the introduction of capital allowances for energy efficient equipment and to be allowed set up knowledge transfer groups, as the pig sector was excluded from this previously and lost funding.

“We are the third-most important producer (in terms of output), but aren’t treated that way. We are looking for a meeting with Minister Creed. We have requested this a few times and still haven’t met him,” O’ Flaherty added.
