The past week has seen another increase in the numbers of cattle on offer in the west and midlands, while parts of the east are seeing numbers slower to peak.

Store cattle have held firm in most areas, with some reports of prices increasing marginally in some areas.

The weanling trade has come under increased pressure and prices have suffered slightly as a result.

Exporters continue to be active for average- to lesser-quality light bulls at a price.

Although they are still active, the numbers being sourced in many areas are lower than in previous weeks.

Mart managers across the country reported a difficult trade for plainer-quality cattle and a slower sell as a result.

The cull cow trade is coming under increased pressure and slightly weaker prices.

Friesian culls are moving at €0.90/kg to €1.15/kg for average-quality types. Demand for crossbred and light cows remains slow, with prices of €0.60/kg to €0.80/kg.

Steers

Forward store bullocks have seen a slight improvement in demand and feeders continue to be active in many areas. Prices are running at €2.00/kg to €2.15/kg for good-quality continentals, while traditional breeds are making €1.85/kg to €1.95/kg and over €2.00/kg for those from a suckler background. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg are a steady trade, but plainer types are a little easier. U grade light stores are making from €2.40/kg to €2.50/kg. Average-quality types are making €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg.

Heifers

Heifer prices have come under slightly increased pressure. Those over 550kg are making €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg for average-quality types, with the top third making up to €2.30/kg in stronger suckler areas. Demand for plain heifers has weakened. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg are making from €2.00/kg to €2.12/kg, with top-quality types making up to €2.45/kg. Plain heifers in the same weight range are making from €1.70/kg to €1.80/kg and in some cases are back to €1.60/kg.

Weanlings

As numbers continue to increase, prices have come under slightly renewed pressure. Forward bulls over 400kg are being met with a much more difficult trade and prices are back €20 to €30/head in many areas. The average 350kg bull is making €820, back slightly on last week. The top third of bulls are making from €2.70/kg to €2.50/kg in the same weight range. Weanling heifer prices have been reasonably steady and are trading at €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg for average-quality types.
