The Teagasc lowland sheep conference took place this week with the hill sheep conference on next week. A key message delivered was the role that increasing output plays in optimising income. This comes through a combination of increasing lamb output, but also reducing mortality. The latter is also the main focus of the new Sheep Welfare Scheme. The Department has extended the closing date for the scheme that offers funding of €10/ewe until Friday 3 February. The decision to join obviously depends on each farm’s circumstances but with an added incentive of an option to withdraw without claw-back, farmers not already signed up should give it plenty of thought.
