Winter barley is perhaps the most urgent of the winter cereals for nitrogen. As we move into the second half of February nitrogen becomes more important, especially when growth conditions become more likely. Consider 50-70kgN/ha on winter barley when it’s safe to do so and target 15-20kgS/ha across one or more splits.

Many winter cereals fields still need P and K, but this must be calculated on an individual field basis. Nitrogen for winter wheat and oats is less urgent but you should be looking to apply this towards the end of this month in much of the country – a bit later further north. The level of growth should drive application decision, or not. First N rates might be 25-50kgN/ha.
