
It was a sobering week for farm safety, when two farmers died in two separate accidents on the same day. Three people died on Irish farms in total this week.
A man in his mid-20s died on his father’s dairy farm in Moneyribbon, Co Wexford, after the quad bike he was driving overturned into a ditch and he became trapped underneath.
The Irish Farmers Journal understands the accident that led to the fatality occurred just before 7am on Wednesday morning.
The young man hopped onto a quad bike to bring the cows in for milking, but at some point the quad overturned into a ditch and the young man was trapped underneath.
According to the HSA, a fatality involving a quad occurs on average once a year.
Late last year, Cork farmer Tom Hales, aged 83, was fatally injured when his quad bike overturned on the family farm at Carrigroe, Enniskeane, Co Cork.
A man in his 70s also died on a farm on Wednesday after being struck by a tractor in Fivealley, Co Offaly.
Separately, on Sunday evening, a Roscommon farmer died following an accident involving cattle on a farm in Arigna.
Founder of Embrace Brian Rohan urged farmers to think ahead each day and remain safe.
