A big entry of 1,000 cattle was brought forward for sale on Thursday of last week. Trade was firm for all classes of cattle, but demand was exceptionally strong for store animals. The bullock trade sold to a top price of £1,480. General prices for heavy bullocks over 600kg were 190p to 237p/kg, with specialist finishers driving the trade.

Mid-weight bullocks sold from 200p to 259p/kg, with cattle weighing 450kg to 500kg selling from £1,140 to £1,200. Light bullocks sold from 210p to 280p/kg.

In the heifer ring, good-quality forward animals sold to a top price of £1,185 for a 535kg Charolais. Numbers were limited and sold from a general price range of 200p to 238p/kg.

The weanling trade saw steers sell from £670 to a top price of £980 for a 362kg Charolais animal. Weanling heifers sold from £580 to £960 for a 394kg Charolais animal.

Calves sold to £505 for a Limousin bull. Angus calves made from £265 to £300. Hereford calves made £250.

Blue calves sold to £290. Friesian calves sold from £65 to £80.
