Last Tuesday saw the first spring-born weanling sale of the year. There was a good entry of 295 weanlings on offer, and the quality of cattle shown was excellent.

Demand was quite strong also, with prices on par with the same time last year. Most cattle on offer were under 370kg, with a smaller offering of autumn 2016-born weanlings also present.

Most of the weanlings, including bucket-reared traditional breed dairy crosses, sold for between €2.40/kg and €2.90/kg, with a smaller proportion selling outside of this price range. There were some Friesian bull weanlings on offer also, and these were a solid trade, making around the €1.70/kg mark.

Heifers of R grade potential were making between €2.10/kg and €2.60/kg in general, with heavily muscled lots getting closer to and over the €3.00/kg mark.

Stock were well weaned and this was very apparent by how calm and quiet the weanlings in the pens were. This was something that buyers are usually anxious for and it translated into the prices paid.

Top price on the day was €1,620 for a 240kg (€6.79/kg) Belgian Blue cross heifer.

Commission rate for weanlings is €8.50/head to the buyer and €9 to the seller. Entry is €2.50/head.
