The British Limousin Cattle Society once again held its premier autumn sale in the Borderway showgrounds, Carlisle, last weekend.
The show and sale saw big entries, despite this year only accepting entries for bulls (no heifers).
The large interest shown in the breed over the past 12 months meant only standing space was available for a number of potential buyers and spectators wishing to view the sale.
The large crowd wasn’t just around to look, with 20 more bulls sold on the year previous and averages up by over £900.
Continuing his successful stint in the Limousin circuit was James MacKay of the Co Derry-based Ampertaine herd in Northern Ireland.
Top price
Straight off the back of joining the 100,000gns club in May, MacKay was again out in front last Saturday when his reserve intermediate champion Ampertaine Magnum sold for the top price of 70,000gns.

The April 2016-born bull was sired by Loosebeare Fantastic and out of Ampertaine Abracadabra daughter Ampertaine Fancypants.
Magnum comes from a long established successful line in the famous herd, breeding bulls such as the 38,000gns Ampertaine Foreman and the 20,000gns Ampertaine Commander. After back and forth bidding from the ringside, the stylish young bull was eventually knocked down to Ian Handley for his Gunnerfleet herd.
The high seller helped greatly in boosting the average sale price to £7,018, up from £6,104 in 2016. Clearance also remained high with 113 sold representing an 82% clearance. Good prices were witnessed throughout the sale with 14 bulls making five figures and over 60 making 5,000gns or more.

In a remarkable statistic the five leading sale prices on the day all featured Ampertaine breeding either as the sire or dam.
Next in line for the top prices was the pre-sale intermediate champion and reserve Overall Champion Sarkley Moray from Messrs E H Pennie & Sons, Powys who sold for 28,000gns. He is one of the first sons to be offered for sale by the 13,000gns Ampertaine Interest. His dam Sarkley Hosanna is a very smart daughter of Sarkley Oriana who was a prolific show winner through 1999 and 2000. In a half share purchase arrangement he was knocked down to G J Lee & C M Lloyd, Kidwelly, Dyfed and A H & K J Booth, Hardwick Hall Farm, Aston, Sheffield.
Three bulls sold at 20,000gns, the first being Gorrycam Major from Gorrycam Limousins, Newry, Co Down, Northern Ireland. A bull with style and muscle Major is by Ampertaine Elgin and is out of Gorrycam Dolly. He is maternal brother to Gorrycam Hunter who made 28,000gns at Carlisle back in October 2013. He went home to the Liscon herd of J Mulholland, Midtown Farm, Great Orton, Carlisle.
Next up at 20,000gns was the June 2016 born Ballinloan Mountain from Stuart Fotheringham, Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross. Mountain was by the noted Wilodge Cerberus son Ampertaine Foreman, and out of Ballinloan Gaga.
He came to Carlisle having been shown successfully over the summer. At the Royal Highland Show he stood as Reserve Overall Beef Breeder Champion, plus he took the Breed Champion spot and Reserve Interbreed Champion at the Perth Show. This bull was sold to Albert Howie for his Knock herd at Stuartfield, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire with Stuart Fotheringham retaining a half share.
The third bull to make 20,000gns was the June 2016 born Grahams Michael from R & J Graham, Bridge of Allan Stirling, who had been tapped out as the Reserve Junior Champion in the pre-sale show.
This bull was the result of an embryo purchased from Irish breeder Willie Smith from the renowned show cow Millbrook Ginger Spice.
Ginger Spice won the interbreed championship at Balmoral Show on no less than three consecutive occasions, a feat likely never to be repeated. Sired by Ampertaine Elgin, Michael too was highly successful on the show circuit securing supreme junior bull and the overall supreme bull at the Royal Highland Show earlier in the year.
Overall champion Trueman Mozart, who sold for 15,000gns. \ Wayne Hutchinson
In a share purchase arrangement he was sold to E W Quick & Sons for their Loosebeare herd in Devon and Messrs Ridley for their Haltcliffe herd in Wigton, Cumbria. Later in the sale the Grahams herd also sold Grahams Mungo for 14,000gns.
This May 2016 bull also had an Irish connection being sired by the Roscrea premier sale topper Kilcor Iceman who sold for €28,000.
Securing the overall championship of the show was Trueman Mozart from Henry Savage and Sons, Co. Down. Having being shown successfully at Balmoral earlier in the summer, Mozart ticked all the boxes for judge Duncan Hazard last week too as he tapped him forward as junior and supreme champion.
This May 2016 born bull is the first son of the world record priced Trueman Jagger who sold at the same sale two years previous for 140,000gns.
However, Mozart didn’t reach the same highs and was knocked down to A Padfield, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk for 15,000gns.
