In France, it is very concerning to see the unfolding developments at Lactalis, which recalled infant formula infected with salmonella. French authorities were first made aware of this salmonella food scare in early December but Lactalis management has dragged its feet on the issue. The situation continues to escalate.
One positive from the horsemeat scandal was that industry leaders at the time took rapid decisive actions to take control of the situation.
The protracted way in which Lactalis has handled this salmonella contamination is of no benefit to the company, or indeed the wider European food industry.

It’s positive to see Glanbia’s new scheme rewarding co-op shareholders who trade with Glanbia Ireland. While the aim of this scheme should drive higher volumes of inputs through Glanbia’s agribusiness, it is the responsibility of farmer board members to ensure that the scheme is not a replacement for efficiency and competitiveness.
