Monday’s sale at Elphin Mart saw a special sale of weanlings, along with an entry of in-calf and calved cows.

Mart manager Gerry Connellan said that the weanling trade was very strong, with heavier heifers from 400kg to 450kg the best trade. He said that the majority of those on offer were better-quality types, with prices for U grade heifers in that weight category ranging mainly from €1,040 to €1,320/head.

According to Gerry, farmer buyers were the main source of demand for all types of heifers.

Those from 350kg to 400kg sold mainly from €1,025 to €1,230, while lighter heifers from 300kg to 350kg sold mainly from €800 to €900/head.

The calved cows were mostly Salers-cross with Limousin calves at foot. The trade for these was very strong also and prices ranged mainly from €1,640 to €1,960 for better-quality cow and calf lots. Demand was strong for these, with plenty of farmer buyers present.

In-calf cows sold mainly from €1,060 for plainer types to €1,640 at the upper end of the market.

There were a share of heavy maiden heifers on offer also. Again, these were Salers-crosses and sold from €1,100 for 475kg to €1,340 for €640kg.

Commission rates are 1.8% to the seller and €9 to the buyer.
