A letter issued to members of the British Limousin Cattle Society last week advised breeders not to purchase or use semen from Limousin AI bull Ballinloan Jaegerbomb and that calves can still be registered from the bull, but will not be fully registered until the situation is resolved.

The bull in question had previously been DNA tested in the UK as well as being genomic tested in Ireland.

However the problem is around verifying the parentage of the dam.

The bull was sold in Carlisle in October 2015 for 24,000gns and was later jumped to provide export-standard semen.

Michael Cursiter, who represents the Scottish region of the British Limousin Cattle Society, said that something had “cropped up”, which had made the Society “suspicious of parentage” and prompted them to alert members.

“We’ve not quite finished with testing a possible solution yet, but when we are finished we’ll put out a statement to inform [members]. We’re waiting on one or two crucial results,” Cursiter told Farmers Journal Scotland.
