A small entry of 20 bulls made it to Dungannon last week for the Northern Ireland Simmental Cattle Breeders Club spring sale. Of the 20 bulls on offer, 14 found new homes to give a clearance of 70%. These bulls sold for an average price of £2,512, while a further 13 females sold for an average of £2,000.

Topping trade at 3,300gns was the fourth-placed Scribby Farms Harvey. Bred by Keith and Andrea Nelson from Rosslea, Harvey found a new home with James McCloskey, Claudy. Born in October 2016, he is by Kilbride Farm Escalop and out of a homebred dam by the 10,000gns Stirling champion Drumlone Anchor.

A further two lots traded at 3,200gns. First in the money was the day’s reserve male and reserve supreme champion Derrycallaghan Home Ringer bred by Harold Stubbs and grandson Alan Burleigh from Co Fermanagh.

This December 2016 Popes Laird son is bred from the Sterling Herkules daughter Derrycallaghan Top Girl. The former class winner at Fermanagh show heads to Newtownstewart with RW Ferguson.

Also selling at 3,200gns was the October 2016 Kilbride Farm Hitech, a third prize winner bred by the Rosbon family. Sired by Welsh-bred stock bull Crugmelyn Brenin, he is out of a homebred dam by the 15,000gns Cairnview Snazzy. He was snapped up by Raymond Thompson from Killaloo, Co Londonderry. It marked a good day for the Robson family as they also exhibited the male and supreme champion Kilbride Farm Hoylake. An August 2016-born bull sired by Kilbride Farm Escalop and out of homebred cow Kilbride Farm Gina 21B, this bull saw the hammer fall at 3,000gns selling to K Haslett from Dungiven.

The female champion led the heifer trade, with Cleenagh Ivy selling for 3,000gns.

This 14-month-old heifer was sired by the 2014 and 2015 Balmoral champion Dermotstown Delboy, and also has a successful show career herself, being awarded junior champion at the NI pedigree calf fair. Buyer was Wesley Abraham for his Magheracrigan Herd based at Irvinestown.

Reserve honours in the female ring went to Leslie and Christopher Weatherup, Ballyclare, for their 19-month old-Lisglass Honeybee. This one came under the hammer at 2,300gns, selling to John and Sandra Middleton, Creevagh, Co Londonderry. This stylish heifer is a daughter of Omorga Murray, and is out of the Kilbride Farm Porter daughter Lisglass Duchess.

British Blue

The Northern Ireland British Blue Breeders Club hosted its spring sale on the same night. There was a select number of bulls forward and two sold to £3,675. The top price at 4,300gns was for the November 2015 Chatham Klint consigned by the Morrison family. Sired by the herd’s Scottish-bred stock bull Auchenlay Eli, he is out of the homebred Paulern Verdi daughter Chatham Gwen. The buyer was Basil Dunne from Ballinamallard, Co Fermanagh.

The pre-sale show was judged by Co Down beef producer Gareth Corrie. He awarded the championship ribbons to Bavan Lone Ranger ET, a January 2016 Bringlee Waldo son bred by Trevor Dodds from Mayobridge, Newry. This bull failed to meet his reserve and was unsold.

The Morrison family’s Chatham Lexie scooped the reserve championship and sold for 2,700gns.

He is also sired by the Auchenlay Eli, and is out of the homebred Chatham Freda. This one was snapped up by Graeme Johnston, Ballynahinch.
