Wednesday’s sale at Elphin Mart saw a smaller entry of bullocks and heifers on offer. Mart manager Gerry Connellan said that the past week has seen less cattle coming forward and most farmers have their buying done.

In terms of demand, he added that better-quality continental cattle are holding their own in terms of prices, but plainer cattle were harder sold this week, with visibly less activity for these types.

The best demand was for forward feeding bullocks and heifers, with feedlot buyers and agents still actively sourcing all types of cattle over 550kg. R+ and U grades in that weight range sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.45/kg and up to €2.65/kg for the best-quality types. Even dairy-crosses over 550kg were a fairly strong trade, with plenty of buyers for them. Gerry said that once you went back under 500kg, plainer-quality cattle were much harder sold than the previous week and the number of plainer-quality cattle on offer was much increased on last week’s trade.

In terms of Monday’s weanling trade, Gerry said that it was similar to the store trade, with better-quality weanlings holding firm, while plainer ones were slower to sell. He said that improved demand from exporters for light weanlings was welcome to see.

Commission rates are 1.8% to the seller and €9 to the buyer.
