Wednesday’s calf sale at Enniscorthy Mart saw numbers well back, according to mart manager Tommy Harrington. He did report that there was a strong demand from buyers, with both shippers and Northern Ireland buyers present.
A total of 245 calves came through the mart, back by nearly 100 head in the past week, according to Tommy, with numbers expected to dwindle further over the coming weeks. The majority of calves were either Angus or Limousin, with bulls making from €150 to €300/head, while heifers were making from €130 to €260/head.
Light Friesian bulls were in the minority and were making €140 to €180/head, with interest from shippers in these lots.
Stronger Friesian bulls were making anywhere from €140 to €180/head.
Strong continental bull calves sold for between €300 and €450/head according to Tommy, while lighter continental bull calves were making between €180 and €280/head.
Continental heifers were making anywhere from €180/head for lighter calves to €400/head for strong heifers.
Commenting on the trade, Tommy said that prices were staying strong for the time of the year, with a lot of farmers traditionally staying away from May- and June-born calves.
