Plans to reopen six of the 139 rural Garda stations that were earmarked for closure in the 2012 and 2013 Policing Plans are under way, according to the Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran.
The news will be disappointing to many in the farming community as crime across the country has increased.
Minister Moran shared the information on the reopening of Garda stations in response to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fáil deputy Charlie McConalogue.
The number of thefts rose to 69,788 in 2017, an increase of 7.7% on 2016, while the number of burglaries reached 19,092 – an increase of 3.3% – according to the most recent statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
A number of farmers have been subjected to repeat quad bike and machinery thefts, especially in the winter months.
Communities in rural areas have expressed concern that many Garda stations are now only open on a part-time basis, giving a perceived lack of a Garda presence in a community.
