Farmers will have access to up to eight bring centres to dispose of old tyres later this year. The Irish Farm Films and Plastics Group (IFFPG) has put out a tender for waste companies to operate the once-off collection and recycle the tyres within six months.
Bring centres will open for one day at Kilmallock, Co Limerick; Athenry, Co Galway; New Ross, Co Wexford; and Cootehill, Co Cavan.
If funding remains available from the €675,000 allocated by the Department of the Environment, further collections will be considered at Mohill, Co Leitrim; Kells, Co Meath; Roscrea, Co Tipperary; and Fermoy, Co Cork.
Minister for the Environment Denis Naughten has promised a once-off collection before introducing recycling fees at a later stage.
“A maximum of tonnes per farmer will be accepted at a reduced rate,” his office said in a statement to the Irish Farmers Journal. This is in addition to €1m in funding provided to local authorities to clear historic stockpiles and will allow farmers to dispose of older tyres, which are “a potential environmental hazard”.
Farmers who continue to use tyres on silage pits must register with the recycling body Repak and will be limited to eight tyres per square metre of pit area.
