For a moment this Friday, staff at the Department’s head office shared the plight of farmers living in fear of a fire breaking out near their crops, bales or forestry.
As fire engines congregated around Agriculture House and traffic came to a standstill on Dublin’s Kildare St, fears grew of fire on the roof of the building.

It later turned out to be a false alarm, with fumes from a pipe mistaken for fire smoke. Still, minutes after extending its nationwide code red fire warning until next Wednesday, the Department led by example and made the right call to the fire brigade. Better safe than sorry.
