Dominic Raab, the UK housing minister, has been appointed as the new Brexit secretary following the resignation of David Davis.

Davis said he could no longer remain in his post as head of Brexit negoations as he felt he no longer believed in the UK’s current position on future relations with the EU which was decided last week.

The news was announced at 10.30am by the prime minister Theresa May following Davis’s overnight resignation.

Raab was a prominent Leave campaigner during the 2016 referendum. He was first elected as an MP in 2010 having worked as chief of staff for, then shadow home secretary, David Davis from 2006 to 2010.

Chris Heaton-Harris has been promoted to the position of junior minister at the Brexit department, replacing Steve Baker.

They will now take charge of Brexit negotiations with the EU as the October deadline approaches.
