Under secretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs Ted McKinney, one of the top officials in the US Department of Agriculture, will deliver the keynote address at the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) annual conference on 7 September.

The association has announced that Under Secretary McKinney would join other international speakers including New Zealand scientific government adviser John Roche, Canadian Cattlement Association executive director Dennis Laycraft, Rabobank dairy analyst Peter Paul Coppes and KPMG global head of agribusiness Ian Proudfoot.

Announcing the news, ASA president Derrie Dillon said: “We are delighted to announce Ted McKinney as the keynote speaker for this year’s conference, which will address the challenges for the Irish agri-food industry in a turbulent international trading environment."

Negotiations

Complex negotiations are under way between the US and a number of its trading partners, including China, Canada, Mexico and Japan. In his role, McKinney plays a central part in these negotiations and it is expected that his insights will give attendees an understanding of the many issues facing the agri-food sector globally.

The US has triggered a trade war with several regions of the world, but agreed with the EU to increase exports of American soya bean to Europe.

The conference, titled From Trade Wars to Consumer Trust, the Challenge for Agri-Food, will consider the outlook for the agri-food sector, the global opportunity for Irish beef and dairy, and the challenge of maintaining consumer trust in a digital age.

The closing address will be delivered by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed.
