Tuesday’s sale at Ballyjamesduff Mart saw another large entry of almost 800 cattle on offer. Like recent weeks, the best trade was for top-quality cattle, with plainer types continuing to be a difficult trade from stores down to weanlings. The better heavy bullocks sold from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg, while average-quality types sold from €2.05/kg to €2.15/kg. Forward stores were a similar trade, but plainer types were easier than short-keep steers and sold from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg were a strong trade where the quality on offer was good, with prices of €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg paid for the top third, while average prices ranged mainly from €1.80/kg to €2.00/kg.
Store heifers were a little stronger than the equivalent bullock with those from 400kg to 500kg selling mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg with the heavy types making over €2.30/kg for top-quality heavy heifers.

This Charolais cross heifer, born June 2016 and weighing 569kg sold for €1,260 (€2.21/kg).

This Limousin cross heifer, born March 2016 and weighing 506kg sold for €990 (€1.95/kg).

This Hereford cross heifer, born April 2016 and weighing 534kg sold for €1,205 (€2.26 /kg).

This Hereford cross heifer, born May 2016 and weighing 644kg sold for €1,395 (€2.17/kg).

This Charolais cross heifer, born February 2017 and weighing 510 kg sold for €1,080 (€2.12/kg).
Prices of weanling bulls and heifers were more variable, with dairy crosses being met with weak demand while the trade for top-quality bulls was on par with last year. The top third of bulls from 300kg to 400kg sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, while heifers sold at similar prices. Top-quality cull cows were a very strong trade with prices of those over 700kg ranging from €1,060 to €1,515/head.
