Gardaí have issued a call for owners to control their dogs and be wary of what they may be capable of doing. It comes following a dog attack in Cloghan, Co Offaly yesterday afternoon that left two sheep dead.

Speaking to Midlands 103, Sergeant Graham Kavanagh said owners needed to take control of their dogs and not allow them to roam freely outside of their property.

He said: “Your friendly little puppy or your friendly little dog can turn into a different type of animal when it gets into a pack or if it comes across sheep, for example, and it can attack.”

He added that while some dogs might not attack in a conventional sense, all are capable of worrying sheep. This he said was equally serious as the distress caused to the animals could kill them.
