The lamb trade in the marts is holding reasonably steady on last week’s returns. Factory-fit lambs weighing 46kg to 49kg are selling from €95 to €103 per head.

Mart managers have reported an increase in the number of lambs being presented for sale over 50kg. These lambs are making up to €108 per head where butchers are active, but many lots are peaking at €104 per head.

The increase in supply of heavy lambs is being put down to increased concentrate feeding during the drought.

Lowland-bred store lambs weighing 37kg to 40kg are making €78 to €80/head. Certain lots of ewe lambs in the same weight range are seeing prices increase by up to €10/head.

Large-framed ewe lambs sold through special breeding sales have seen strong prices exceeding €110/head and even surpassing €120/head.

Breeding sales continue to see mixed results. Prices are down €10 to €25/head compared with last year in most sales.

Some prices paid are on par with last year, but these are few and far between.

Hoggets this week are selling anywhere from €120 to €180 per head. Good-quality second- and third-crop sheep are selling from €130/head to €150/head, with some breeding ewes struggling to reach prices of €120/head.

Light cull ewes are selling from €40 to €80 per head. Heavier fleshed types are selling from €85 to €115 per head. Large-framed ewes with a very good flesh cover are making €120 per head.
