Participants in the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) should have recently received hardcopy submission forms to complete their 2017 carbon navigator update.
It is important to note that the information required refers to 2017 and not 2018. Data can also be submitted through the ICBF recording portal or through approved farm software packages.
Access can be gained to the ICBF portal by filling in your username, which is your herd number (BTE number), and password into the relevant section at www.icbf.com. If you cannot remember your password, there are three ways to get it:
Text the word PASS to 089-457 7663 to receive your password. NOTE: Your mobile number needs to be stored on the database for this system to work. Email query@icbf.com.Call ICBF on 023-882 0452 during office hours.Participants who have lost hardcopy return sheets or have any query on the BDGP programme can call 023-883 2883 or email bdgp@icbf.com.
Now is also a good time to submit survey data on calves aged over five months and also check if your herd is on target to meet breeding requirements. The first milestone is for farmers to have 20% of their reference number of animals genotyped as four or five stars on the replacement index, on an across-breed basis, by 31 October 2018.
Animals must be aged over 16 months of age (born on/before 30 June 2017) on both dates to be taken into account in calculations.
You can check the number of eligible females in your herd through your ICBF login. Go to the reports section, BDGP and generate a new ‘BDGP Eligibility Report’. If you find that you do not have enough eligible females currently in your herd, your only option at this stage is to purchase the required females, as it is too late to genotype extra animals already in your herd. If purchasing eligible females, you will need to ensure that they:
Are born between 1 January 2013 and 30 June 2017.Have a genomic €uro-Star index (a genotyping tag in an animal’s ear does not automatically mean that it qualifies). Are four or five stars on the replacement index at the time of purchase. If purchasing animals through a mart, this information is displayed on the screens in most marts.
If purchasing animals privately, you can check the details through the ICBF online animal search. This is available as a free app for Apple and Android phones. If you have any queries in relation to your herd’s BDGP requirements, you are encouraged to contact ICBF on 023-882 0452 or email query@icbf.com.
