Over 400 tractors, jeeps and cars caused a 2.5km tailback to recycle tyres in Cootehill, Co Cavan, on Saturday 29 September and the unprecedented demand for the Department of Environment-subsidised tyre service has prompted the IFA to call for a nationwide roll-out of the scheme and additional funding.

Thomas Cooney (centre), IFA environment and rural affairs committee chair, with Cavan IFA chair Elizabeth Ormiston.

“The volume of traffic was incredible and shows farmer support for the scheme,” IFA environment chair Thomas Cooney told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“However, we were lucky that the local priest allowed farmers to make use of the church car park, as the Gardaí were considering closing the event due to the level of traffic disruption in Cootehill.”

Tyre scheme

Earlier this year, Minister for the Environment Denis Naughten announced a €700,000 scheme to subsidise the recycling of tyres on farms.

Only farmers can avail of the service, which allows them to recycle up to 3t of tyres (330 car tyres) for €45.

“Given the huge level of support for this recycling initiative and farmers' willingness to recycle, Minister Naughten should now announce the nationwide roll-out of this service to ensure this waste stream is removed off farms and recycled sustainably,” Cooney said.

“This recycling of farm tyre waste builds on the farming community’s strong record. For example, each year farmers recycle almost 27,000 tonnes of farm plastic and hundreds of tonnes of other waste streams, such as meal bags and chemical drums.”

Remaining tyre recycling dates are listed below:

  • Tuesday 9 October – New Ross Mart, Co Wexford, 9am-5pm.
  • Saturday 13 October – Athenry Mart, Co Galway, 9am-5pm.
  • Saturday 20 October – Goldrum Mines, Monard, Co Cork, 9am-5pm.
