The UK’s Secretary of State at the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affair (Defra), Michael Gove, has announced his department will conduct a review of how agricultural funding is allocated.

The review is expected to take six months and will look at how domestic farm support is allocated across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Funding allocations to farmers in the UK have already been guaranteed through 2020 and the review will make recommendations on how funds are allocated after this point.

Under the terms of reference of the review, the panel will “consider a wide range of factors reflecting the environmental, agricultural and socio-economic circumstances of each of the four parts of the UK”.

These factors are suggested to include the need to use public funds cost effectively, farm output and size across the UK, land classification and environmental conditions.

The review will be chaired by Lord Paul Bew from Belfast, who will be supported by a panel of representatives from across the UK.
