Trade at this year’s autumn bull sales in Stirling witnessed exceptional levels across most breeds. Kick-starting the three days of shows and sales was the Aberdeen Angus breed, which reached a ceiling of 22,000gns twice.
Leading the way in the males and the first to hit the mark was Linton Gilbertines Powerhouse T169 from the trustees of the late Gordan Brooke.
This April 2017-born bull is sired by Rawburn Dublin, while the dam is a daughter of Rawburn Lord Ross, who also bred the 17,000gns Linton Gilbertines President.
Carrying a terminal index of +64, Powerhouse ranks as the highest terminal indexed bull to be offered at public auction.

The 1,100kg bull is no stranger to the show ring either, having placed first and reserve male champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. Securing the high seller at 22,000gns was Holystone Farms.
Next highest of the bulls was Kilmaluag Eriskay T2013, which sold for 14,000gns to the Blelack herd. This January 2017-born bull was reserve junior male champion at this year’s Highland Show. Sired by Reties JFK, Eriskay is out of Mosston Muir Etta and was brought out by Donald Rankin.
The previous day’s reserve overall champion, which was picked out by judge Northern Ireland breeder Noel Hooke, sold for the princely sum of 13,000gns.

The stylish Tynet Pegasus T033 found a new home with the well-known Wedderlie herd. Sired by Warrenho Dalmigavie, he is out of a dam sired by Balaldie Brutus.
Cairnton Blackbeard from K and M Howie was next in line when he sold for 12,500gns. Born April 2017, this bull is sired by Haymount Walarlo, while the dam is homebred Cairnton Blackbird N359. This bull was admired by many and was eventually knocked down to D Lindsay.
Just behind Blackbeard and securing a price tag of 11,000gns was McCornick Evening Express T379 from Martin McCornick.

This stylish May 2017-born bull is out of Halbeath Pentagon N511, while the dam is out of homebred bull McCornick Blockbuster. This one heads to the Blackhaugh herd of Mr Elliot.
Claiming the sale’s overall championship title was Andrew Hodge with his January 2017-born bull Rulesmain Egbert T872.

This bull is well used to winning ways, having placed as junior champion at this year’s Royal Highland Show. Sired by the 17,000gns Hallington Edition, he is out of homebred Rulesmain Evita Samantha P616. Egbert found a new home at 10,000gns, selling to Hamish Sclater.
Overall, 80% of Angus bulls forward sold to average £5,737, which was up £674 on the year.
Dispersals
Along with the annual bull sales, the autumn sale also played host to two complete Angus herd dispersals.
First up was the Moncur herd of Russell and Nancy Taylor, a herd which needs no introduction, being well known among all breeders.
They saw their top lot match that of the bull trade, with Moncur Laura T314 selling for 22,000gns. This April 2017-born heifer is the result of an embryo purchased by the outfit and is sired by Blelack Duke, while the dam is prolific show cow Haughton Laura L026. Securing the high seller was the Idvies herd in Forfar.
Also taking place on the Monday evening was the Schivas dispersal sale. This sale reached a top price of 18,000gns for the in-calf heifer Schivas Morning Princess S430.
Born April 2016, this heifer is sired by Water End Jackpot Eric, while the dam is sired by Cardona Rito. This one found a new home in Northern Ireland with Jonathan and Lisa Doyle of the Drumhill herd. The pair also secured the mother ahead of the sale leader for the price of 6,000gns.
Another lot from the Schivas herd, Schivas Miss Betty N149, secured a bid of 16,000gns. Homebred on both sides, this five-year-old cow sold alongside her March-born bull calf by Gretnahouse Exocet. Successful bidder here was Brailes livestock.
Last of the five-figure sums was Schivas Jane Erica R341 which met trade at 12,000gns. This Hallington Powerline daughter sold alongside her Schivas Edge-sired February-born calf. This one heads home with Renton and Readon partners.
Other breeds
The Shorthorns were the only breed to witness a decrease on the year, with 15 bulls selling for £4,487, which was down £634. Top of the Shorthorns was the overall champion Shawhill Leroy, which sold for 12,000gns.
In the Limousin ring, the 11,000gns price tag was hit twice. First up was the overall champion Knock Nicol, while matching him was Burnbank Northernlad.
Overall, the breed witnessed an 80% clearance rate, with 49 bulls selling to average £5,182, up £119 on the year.
The Charolais breed witnessed the top price across the sales, with Maerdy Newman from Esmor Evans securing a bid of 40,000gns. Overall, the breed fared exceptionally well, witnessing a 74% clearance rate to average £6,979, up a massive £798 on the year.
Lastly, the Simmental breed saw a peak of 16,000gns for Islavale Irish. Across the board, 69 Simmentals sold to average £6,187. This is up nearly £500 on the year, with an extra eight bulls sold.
