With a full-time job as a fabricator, there is a strong focus on health and safety on Daniel Hawthorne’s beef, sheep and soon-to-be poultry farm in Monaghan.
Good facilities lend themselves well to ease of handling for a part-time farmer, he told the farm safety conference in Carlow on Friday.
Letting someone know
“Proper PPE is needed. I know it’s only a small thing, but I always have steel-toe wellies, which is something I took from my time in Ballyhaise,” Daniel said.
“Lone working is a key issue on my own farm. Any major event I think is going to be dangerous, I contact my parents to let them know I’m going to undertake this.
"In some cases, farmers have been left days without anyone noticing; letting someone know is important.”

He added that it is cheaper to get minor machinery defects fixed straight away than leaving them on the long finger, when they potentially become a much bigger problem.
“Adequate facilities and good lighting are a high cos, but definitely something farmers need to look in to,” he said.
Daniel places a focus on making sure the facilities on farm fit in around the time you have on the farm.
He also has an animal health programme in place, focusing on prevention rather than cure.
