The Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS) has said dairy processors should avoid dilution of existing competitiveness by the industry in its approach to key markets.
ICOS, in reaction to recent commentary surrounding the marketing of Irish dairy products in international markets, said the Ornua model worked strongly and effectively to provide worldwide market access for Irish dairy. It said this was on the back of marketing Ireland’s green and sustainable food production credentials.
While it acknowledged that continuous innovation and product diversification was an essential part of the future development in the industry, it added it was important there was no duplication of resources or investment.
ICOS said the dairy co-op movement appreciated, valued and supported the role of Ornua, who secures €2bn in export trade annually, of which all individual members benefited.
“This includes promotion of our existing grass-fed production model, which projects a natural and wholesome image of Ireland and is also underpinned by national quality programmes including the Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme,” ICOS said.

The co-op society said that through Kerrygold, Ornua has, over several decades, developed a high-quality, premium and trusted brand which has a long-standing market presence.
ICOS added that the fact it was now worth close to €1bn was a testament to farmers who funded it through levies and showed what could be achieved when co-ops combined their efforts.
