The next step in the proposed Lakeland Dairies and LacPatrick co-op merger has been made, with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission receiving formal notification of a merger.
It follows on from a similar merger notification received recently by the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
Given the cross-border nature of the proposed merger, it has to be approved by both competition authorities.
In April this year, LacPatrick announced it was looking for potential merger options and members of both respective co-ops have now voted in favour of a merger.
The CCPC stated that the merger was currently at the preliminary stage of investigation by the authority.
In the merger proposal to the CCPC, Lakeland Dairies describes itself as a dairy processing co-op that, “operates within a fifteen county catchment area across the northern half of the island of Ireland.
“Lakeland Dairies Co-Operative Society Limited processes about one billion litres of quality milk annually into a range of value added dairy foodservice products and functional dairy food ingredients.”
While LacPatrick co-op simply states that it, “operates a process site in the State, at Co. Monoghan and two in Northern Ireland.”
