Tuesday’s sheep sale at Enniscorthy Mart saw a steady trade for all types of sheep. Mart manager Tommy Harrington said that in recent days there was talk of the trade being a little weaker at some sales, but he added that they saw no change at the sale, with demand just as strong as it was last week.

He said that the sale was a little smaller and added that numbers are looking like they will tail off quite quickly this year, with a lot of the store lambs already sold.

“We have seen very strong butchers’ demand here in Enniscorthy this year and the trade has resulted in more and more farmers coming to the mart with heavy lambs,” said Tommy.

“The majority of butchers’ lambs over 52kg sold to a top price of €116/head, with the majority of heavy lambs making €110/head and upwards.”

There was strong demand for factory lambs also, but quality and cover are still the main driving factors affecting prices. The majority of well-fleshed lambs from 46kg and upwards sold from €105 to €107/head.

Store lambs continue to be a strong trade, with farmer buyers still active for all types. At the top of the trade, forward lambs sold to €101 for 43kg, while the majority of other good-quality types sold from €85 to €93/head, while those carrying a little less cover sold from €79 upwards.

The cull ewe trade saw prices top out at €121 for a 100kg ewe, while other good-quality types sold from €80 to €100.

Commission rates are €1/head to the buyer and €1.20 to €1.70/head to the seller.
