Some 8,100 of the 9,600 farmers who applied for the Young Farmer Scheme (YFS) in 2018 have been paid a total of €18.1m.

The 1,500 young farmers not yet paid are either being asked by the Department for outstanding information or they require an inspection or administrative check for eligibility.

Inspections consist of land eligibility inspections and a check that the young farmer is in control of the finances and management of the farm.

For 2018, all land eligibility inspections are complete.

Checks that young farmers are in managerial and financial control of their farms will begin now.

In previous years, most cases deemed ineligible were because the farm’s sales and purchases were not through the young farmer’s bank account.
