Some 27% of overhead track machines in meat factories failed inspections last year, revised figures from the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) show.

The overhead track holds the hook that carries the carcase in factories and 66 inspections were carried out across beef, sheep, pig and poultry factories.

Inspections are both announced and unannounced and failure reasons can include broken seals, instrument modification or inaccurate weighing where a machine is out of tolerance.

“The instruments were re-verified and put back into use within 20 days,” the NSAI said.
