Monday’s special weanling sale at Tuam Mart saw an entry of about 210 bulls and 110 heifers on offer.

Mart manager Marian Devane said that farmer buyers were very active for all types of weanlings.

She said that prices at the sale were up slightly on the same sale last year, but she accredited this to the quality of stock that was on offer this year.

There was good demand both from farmer buyers and exporters.

Well-muscled bulls suitable for the export market sold mainly from €1,050 to €1,150/head, while some plainer bulls were also bought for export.

Marian said that good grass growth over the winter is definitely helping the trade, with buyers from the midlands and the south looking to source bulls and heifers for grass.

The average weanling bull from 320kg to 350kg sold mainly from €850 to €950/head. Heavier bulls over 400kg sold from €930 to €1,050/head.

Heifers were on par with bulls price-wise and, again, the main source of demand was farmer-driven.

Light heifers from 270kg to 300kg sold mainly from €740 to €800, while heavier types over 300kg sold mainly from €800 to €950/head.

There were some plainer types on offer also, which sold for just under €700/head. Commission rates are €2% to the seller and €10 to the seller.
