Some 1,100 animals had to be re-tagged as a result of the new EID-compatible format.

A new numbering format for bovine tags, starting with 372 instead of IE, has been issued since 1 November 2016. Farmers had up until 30 June last year to use up their old IE tags.

Any application to register calves with IE tags born on or after 1 July 2018 has been rejected, the Department of Agriculture confirmed.

In these cases, applicants are required to retag the animal with a 372 format tag under the supervision of their Regional Veterinary office before an application to register the animal can be processed.

Approximately 1,100 animals required retagging in the 372 numbering format, Department figures show.
