Due to demand, Bandon Mart will be holding a second calf sale every Thursday for March and April. The venture got off to a solid start, with 400 calves on offer.
Mart manager Tom McCarthy was very happy after the sale: "It's a new service for the farmers of west Cork that's being provided and it might be hard for people to get used to it."
With the changes to rules regarding the age of calves at sale, it offers farmers another avenue to get calves away faster.
Calves that were too young to sell at Monday's sale, for example, were now eligible at this sale and this showed in the numbers.
Young Friesians
Tom said: "There was a lot of younger calves in it. The younger Friesian calf was making €15 to €50. There's no point saying anything other than that.
"For the stronger calf, prices were no different to Monday's prices. You were talking €55 to €85, with the very good ones making over €100.

Angus and Herefords
Hereford and Angus calves were the same as Monday, with most selling for between €120 and €240 and there were buyers for them.

Heifer calf section
The dairy heifer calf sale was held after the main calf sale.
As this is a specialised market, it meant momentum wasn't lost in getting through the bigger numbers of Friesian bulls and beef calves.
Friesian heifer calves sold mainly for between €175 and €240. There was much less demand for Jersey-cross heifers. These sold for between €1 and €115.

A weekly dairy sale will also be held on Thursdays alongside the calf sale and it got off to a solid start with 25 calved cows on offer. They were selling for between €1,150 and €1,400.
