Woodco, a manufacturer of biomass boilers in Donaskeigh, Co Tipperary, is planning to start selling a portable machine capable of transforming farm waste into renewable electricity and heat by the end of this year.

The Biogenic Processor is a self-contained combined heat and power generator running on organic material containing up to 35% moisture.

“In May, we begin trials in a local mushroom farm, where we aim to provide all his heating requirements from his own spent mushroom and use the electrical generation to offset some of the power coming from the grid,” Woodco technical director Declan Crosse told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Other readily usable fuels for the machine include chicken litter and farmyard manure, while wetter feedstocks such as slurry or even human waste can be de-watered before use. The Biogenic Processor was developed for use in areas with poor access to the electricity grid in Canada, and for sanitation in developing countries. The pyrolisis process inside the machine gasifies and burns the energy from the waste, leaving a sterilised, charcoal-like residue known as biochar.

This product is increasingly used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from soils and feed, and can also be sold for industrial applications.

Crosse said that the Biogenic Processor could treat 13kg DM of material per hour and had an output of 100kW heat and 4kW electricity, with plans to increase this to 8kW. The machine won a Green Award last month.
