Some 1,507 farmers have now lodged an initial appeal notification to the Department of Agriculture under the new Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

This is led by Wexford, which accounts for one third of the appeals.

Offaly, Tipperary, Laois and Donegal all have over 100 appeals lodged.

A review of eligible lands resulted in some areas deemed to be not disadvantaged enough to remain in the 2019 Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) scheme.

Wexford lost one quarter of its previously eligible area in the recent review, with 227 townlands, representing an estimated 300 farmers, excluded.

Closing date

The closing date for the first stage of the appeals process (the receipt of an appeals notification form) is 8 April 2019.

Farmers can still submit a Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) application on lands which are subject to an appeal for the 2019 ANC scheme.

When an appeal notification is received, the farmer receives details about the eligibility status of his/her townland. This information can then be used as the basis of a full appeal if the farmer wishes to proceed.

A total of 762 distinct townlands are represented by the individual appeal notifications in the map below.
