Two Irish ploughmen lead the way in both ploughing classes after day one of the European Ploughing Championships which are being held in Ballinaboola, Co Wexford.

Dan Donnelly is in first place in the reversible category where he is closely followed by England’s Michael Chappell in second and France’s Rohan Pinault in third.

In the conventional section, Martin Kehoe heads up the field followed by Har Meuwissem from the Netherlands and Rhodri George from Wales.

Some 33 competitors from 13 countries and over 200 European visitors between competitors, judges, coaches and supporters have descended on Ireland for the international competition.

Final day

The final day of competitions will take place today.

European Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan opened proceedings yesterday. Alongside the competitions, there have been displays of vintage ploughing and horse-drawn ploughs.
