The IFA is preparing to protest against delays in Fair Deal reform.

Minister of State for Older People Jim Daly said that he expected to bring the heads of bill to Government in May.

He was answering a parliamentary question from Independent TD Carol Nolan, who said delays were “having immediate, dramatic and totally avoidable consequences for farming families”.

Last July, the Government agreed to exclude farms from means testing for nursing home charges after three years.

Since then, the IFA says farming families in the scheme have paid an average of €40,000 each based on their farms’ valuations.

The organisation wants Minister Daly to give an end date for the charges.

“A protest is on the agenda shortly if there’s no movement,” said IFA farm family chair Caroline Farrell.
